A bobblehead – also known as nodder, wobbler, wacky wobbler or bobbing head doll – is, by definition, a small collectible figurine whose head is oversized in relation to the body. The head is either rigidly attached or mounted on a spring or hook, so that a light tap makes it nod and "bobble" – hence the name (from English *to bobble* = to sway). Want to start right away? Official names – Internationally the figurine is known by many names: *Bobblehead*, *Bobble Head Doll*, *Nodder*, *Wobbler*, *Wacky Wobbler* (a registered trademark of Funko) and *Bobbing Head Doll*. In German-speaking countries the common terms are *Wackelkopf*, *Wackelfigur* and – for the iconic dog version on car shelves – *Wackeldackel*.
History – from bobbing pagodas to modern collectibles – The first head-on-pendulum figurines appeared as early as the 17th century in Asia as so-called *bobbing pagodas* or *temple nodders* – small porcelain figures with a swinging head. In the 19th century they spread across Europe, particularly through German and Bohemian porcelain production. The bobblehead's big breakthrough came in the 1960s in the USA, when player figurines were distributed as stadium giveaways in Major League Baseball. In parallel, the German Wackeldackel on the rear shelf became a cultural icon of the post-war boom. Since the 2000s bobbleheads have enjoyed a worldwide revival – today primarily as personalized figurines based on photos.
How does a bobblehead work technically? – In classic bobbling models the head is connected to the body via a small steel spring or hook in the neck. Even a light touch, vibration or shake sets the head into a dampened nodding motion that lasts several seconds. In the static variant the head is mounted rigidly – but the oversized head proportions remain the defining stylistic feature.
Typical proportions – The defining trait is the head-to-body ratio of roughly 1:3 to 1:7. At Wackelwelt we work with a ratio of 1:7 – realistic enough for a recognizable likeness while keeping the classic bobblehead silhouette.
Material – High-quality bobbleheads today are made from premium polymer clay (FIMO) or resin. Both materials are UV-resistant, break-proof and allow the finest detail modelling – from facial features and clothing to accessories. Cheap mass production often uses ceramics or painted plastic.

Bobblehead vs. Wackelfigur vs. Wackelkopf – is there a difference? – Linguistically, no: all three terms mean the same product. *Bobblehead* is the English term, *Wackelfigur* and *Wackelkopf* are the German equivalents. Strictly speaking, *Wackelkopf* refers to the variant with a moving head, while *Wackelfigur* also includes rigid models.
How accurate is the likeness to the photo? – Every face is hand-sculpted from polymer clay – no 3D printing, no algorithm. We deliberately bring out characteristic features such as hairstyle, beard, glasses, face shape, eye colour and tattoos so the person is recognisable at first glance. The 1:7 head-to-body ratio creates a lovingly exaggerated look rather than an exact copy. Which photos deliver the best result? – A sharp, frontal face photo in daylight without sunglasses, hats or heavy filters works best. Add a profile or half-profile shot, a full-body photo for posture and build, and close-ups of clothing, jersey, tattoo or pet.
